Solve : External HD only reads on one computer??

Answer»

Hi All,

I have a Simpletech drive that I use for work. I formatted it in ex Fat thinking I could use it on a MAC as well as PC. I used my laptop with Vista while doing all this. It won't read on MAC but thats no really my problem now. At home I have an XP machine and another Vista machine. This drive will only read on my laptop. On the other machines it shows the drive being there but says that it needs to be formatted?? What??? The drive cannot be corrupt if it works, reads and writes perfectly off my laptop. Also it automatically instals the drivers. On the other Vista PC it shows that the drivers are installed. Why is it not working on other pc's? I really want to remove files off this drive and can't do anything.

Any one have any thoughts?

ToddI'm not familiar with a file system called "ex fat".Extended file allocation table (exFAT) is a new file system that is better adapted to the growing needs of mobile personal storage. The exFAT file system not only handles large files, such as those used for media storage, it enables SEAMLESS interoperability between desktop PCs and DEVICES such as portable media devices so that files can easily be copied between desktop and device. In addition, exFAT can be adopted with minimal effort.

This was the only FAT format that was available to format the HD in. New to me as well. I only did it because I thought that a MAC could read it. But I don't know why my laptopn reades and writes to it FINE but my other computers won't. I can see that maybe the XP OS wouldn't but not another Vista.Alright- Did a little diggin for YA...

XP can only read FAT, FAT32, and NTFS. (well, we all know that, don't we?)

Vista With no Service Pack cannot read ex FAT either. are both your vista computers running SP1, or just the one used to format?

I suggest simply backing up the drive and formatting with NTFS.

It's on the list of computer accessories and parts. They have the DVI VIDEO thing to convert that jap monitor to work with your other computer. Just about any other kind of wire adaptor, usb connectors, monitor extension wires, ps2 extention wires, and all kinds of female and male swap connectors and things that I think would help your shop. If that above link don't work then goto www.lducompany.com and click on computer accessories. Let me know if that is what you need and give me your email address again.
