Solve : Extra HD is Dead?

Answer»

A couple of years ago I bought a Buffalo 250GB HD for to be used for backup / storage. When powered on, a red light and a green light are suppose to turn on. The green light is suppose to show that it is active.

For several months I have been unable to get the green light to COME on. My PC will not recognize the HD at all. In other words, I can't use it at all.

I bought another 1000GB HD recently to go with an older 160GB HD I had previously. Both of them work fine. So, I was wondering how I could get my 250 activated. Any suggestions?I'm assuming the Buffalo is in an external ENCLOSURE correct ? ?

1st see if it is listed in Disk Management even with the red light...if so right clik it and select Properties and report BACK with the details...

Another thing we may have to try is REMOVING it from the enclosure and hooking it up as an internal slave drive...to determine whether it's the enclosure or the drive itself that has failed.

Let us Know...I hooked it up. I am not sure what you're asking me to right click. Where is disk management located? Also, it's an external HD but I don't know what you mean by external enclosure and internal slave drive.Right clik My Computer and select Manage...then Disk Management on the left...

Look for the drive listed there...

The enclosure is the case it's in...it can be removed to be tested.I just did that and the drive is not listed there. Only the C drive (currently in my PC) and the D drive (CD ROM) can be seen. So, next is to get a screwdriver and take it apart?

Then what?
Slave Drive Tutorial...It's not in my PC. It's an extra drive I bought for backup. I connect it to my PC by USB. Quote from: hockeysticks on November 11, 2009, 05:49:19 PM

Sometimes pre-assembled USB drives use special screws and/or glued casings so that you can't get in there. My Seagate Free Agent USB HDD does.
