Solve : Failed POST on packard bell imedia d2317?

Answer»

Hello,

my packard bell imedia will not boot i just get a red can light on the power button,

it froze while i was transferring files from my laptop, wouldnt do anything so i HELD the power button in until it went off, then tried to boot up but it would just go off after 2seconds, after 2 or 3 more trys the light just went red and light up the can symbol, the fan starts but stops pretty much straight away.

steps taken so far:

stripped everything out of case and disconnected everything,

placed motherboard with just CPU, and cpu fan on smooth wood surface,

connected just psu power cable NOT the cpu power and used screw DRIVER to bridge start and tried it with on/off switch= power on, cpu fan on with constant red light, no display.

then connected cpu power and used screw driver to bridge start and tried it with on/off switch=red light comes on for less than a second the shuts off, no display.
Here's what's needed for a successful POST:

CPU/Fan/MBoard.
1 stik of RAM
PSU
Monitor/mouse and keyboard.
Vid card if needed.

See if this helps...that is contrary to advise GIVEN for diagnosing POST failures!

so what you are saying i need to have the above connected to post as that contadicts the post failure guides i;ve readis it possible ive maxed my hdd and caused a lock up in the bios, i have reset my cmos, 5 days ive been at this now and its starting to look bleak, i cant imagine(or hope lol) that its a major fault with the mobo/cpu as we've only had the pc for 15 months, but i am WILLING to try anything as we are not in a position to purchase another pcThe HDD is not needed to have a machine POST....
