Solve : Favicon troubles ARGH?

Answer»

Okay well I've done a bit of research and cannot find a solution to this problem. I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.4, and I'm having troubles with refreshing my website's favicon. My website is here: http://www.sqthreer.com and my new favicon should be a light gray shape with a square in the bottom-left, and my old one, the one that won't change, should be DARK gray with a blue square.

Clearing the cache (a million times over I might add) and restarting FF isn't working, and I really have no idea what to do. The icon shows up fine in Opera 9.0 and Flock, and is screwed up (a slightly mangled version of my old favicon) in IE 7 Beta 2.

And while I'm at it, I have another question about favicons. I know that if you put one in your root directory (which is what I did) it will be used for all subdirectories beneath it. But if you put one in a subdirectory, say sqthreer.com/stuff, will the icon show up for stuff's directory and all those within? I would certainly hope so.

k all doneWhat are you using to clear cache?

FlameTo change Firefox's cached favicon, you need to delete the bookmark from your bookmarks menu and re-create it. Quote

What are you using to clear cache?

Flame

I'm using Firefox's Tools > Options > Privacy > Cache > Clear Cache Now

I also tried doing what robpomeroy said and it was unsucessful :[Did you remove ALL references to your website from your bookmarks?  Are you using Sessionsaver or any other extension that might hang on to the memory of the old favicon?

In answer to your other question, I'm afraid it depends.  Favicons are not a universally recognised standard, either at the server or the client end, and implementations differ.  It's just not something you can rely on working consistently.I am indeed using Sessionsaver, and I had thought about that being a problem but wasn't sure. Should I disable it before I clear the cache or is there a folder of files I can erase or something?

And thanks for the answer for my other question. I GUESS I'll just see if I'm able to do it or not. It's nothing of any dire importance, just a little thing for myself.Yeah, disable Sessionsaver, remove the bookmark link, clear cache, exit Firefox.Alright I did that, a few times, and it didn't work. I'm thinking maybe there's something else that's doing some sort of cache meddling?

A curious thing though, when I vist http://sqthreer.com, the correct icon shows up, but it's still the wrong one with http://www.sqthreer.com. What could this mean?No - that's what you'd expect, because Firefox SEES these as different domains.

You could try just deleting your bookmarks file.  Obviously export them first.  You might even like to use Foxmarks, to bung them on an INDEPENDANT server.  Not sure if Foxmarks preserves the favicons - I suspect not.Well, I am sorry to say that didn't work either. Nothing really seems to be. Would anything change if I reinstalled Firefox?Good grief - they're pernicious, aren't they?!

Like you, I have now searched and searched, and can't find any information about where Firefox stores the little beggars.  I have two remaining suggestions:

1.  Ask the same question over at the Mozilla forums.

2.  Systematically remove files from your Mozilla Firefox profile folder (C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application data\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles...) until you find the one (or more) that contain the favicons.  You'd need to keep restarting Firefox whilst doing this.Okay I figured it out. In a way.

I just resorted to using the Firefox extension Favicon Picker instead of dealing with the mess of figuring out how to get it to DISPLAY normally. I know for sure that the favicon works, it was just something with Firefox, and I just wanted to actually see it in my address bar, so the extension did the trick.

Thanks a lot for your help though, it was very neat of you.
