Use of a torrent makes possible a wide range of material that is not readily available on conventional download servers

Examples:

Scientific REPORTS and videos that are free for distribution. The authors want the material available, but will not deploy funds for a web site. So they can just turn it over to the torrent sites.

Independent Music by COMPOSERS and reformers who want to show off talent  with not charge. The use of  a torrent site can given them a bigger audience. Some have videos.

Fringe Film Makers that also want the public to see what they can do. Again, a web site would overload their budget and personnel.

Education Videos and documents provided free of charge. Many education INSTITUTIONS do have web sites with FTP. Even so, allowing torrents can cut downn of the server load.

Public Domain and GPL libraries take up a huge about of storage space. Having such achieves distributed as torrents reduces the cost of keeping the marital available to everyone. These seldom have videos, but they do have video players and codecs and other useful tools for video hobbyists.

Of course, the bulk of material being transferred by torrent is in violation of the copyright laws.

To find a source of legal material, just do a search on “Legal Torrent Sites” and find a lot of information. Yes you can torrent  without breaking the law.

I notice reading reports and web sites that Americans are loosing a lot of their freedoms on the web etc, and the new law N.D.A.A. signed over the xmas holidays ( when no-one was looking will make it worse.
