Solve : Finding Driver for Built-in Soundcard?

Answer»

Recently, I had just reformatted my Windows XP running Gateway computer. I was able to install my Graphic and Internet card without a problem, yet I noticed I did not have a sound and that it did not recognize my speakers. After looking everywhere to see why I did not have sound, the overall answer was "Install a driver for your sound card"

My sound card is built into my motherboard and I don't have any disks. How can I find the driver for it?1) Install the chipset driver
2) Go to the Gateway site or the site of the sound card (chip) manufacturer and download and install the correct driveroption A is to lookup your PC on gateway's site and get a driver from them.

Gateway unfortunately has a terrible site, so if you want to do it geek style, pop the case and see if the motherboard has a model number, and find specs from the manufacturer. If the board is not CLEARLY labled in any way, then look at the board near the speaker jacks, and see if there is a small chip near there. You may be able to identify the sound chip its SELF. google any sort of #s or text on the chip, and this may lead you in the right direction.

If no chip, you could take a shot in the dark and download some ac'97 driversQuote from: tsarles on April 08, 2010, 10:59:08 AM

No, don't "take a shot" at anything.

You can find the model of your sound device in device manager. If you can't find it there download and run either Everest or Belarc AdvisorThis may SEAM like a stupid question though... Where can I find the exact model of my computer?

Where it says computer, I see "Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz 3.20 GHz, 1.50 GB of Ram"
Though that doesn't seam like it would be it.

I computer is rather old and I don't see it on the site.Download Everest here:
http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Open it, then CLICK Computer, then Summary.
In the upper menu, go to Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include anything under the line Debug - PCI
