Solve : Floppy drive problems but Device Manager says ok?

Answer»

Windows XP Home Edition

Floppy drive has green light on consistently (with/without disk in) -

Device Manager says working properly -

Tried to updated driver but no update available -

Insert disk only to get message to "insert disk into drive A:" -

Everest Home Edition says floppy is there and working -

Removed floppy drive and attached another only to see green light is on (with/without disk) but still ask for floppy to be inserted

Wires attached properly -

Now what?

If the above is all true, I would suspect the floppy controller or cable. What happened prior to this? Any recent CHANGES in hardware or software? Did you remove and reseat the floppy cable where it attaches to the motherboard? What if you delete the floppy drive in Device Manager and restart the computer? Updating driver not relevant SINCE Windows provides this. Are you free from malware?Thank you for your reply -
Yes, I deleted floppy from device manager and restarted. Tried it twice.

Cleaned malware.

No changes in hardware.

Also having problems finding printer as well. Used disk to install as did before. Computer doesn't recognize hardware so downloaded software from hp and it still doesn't recognize printer hardware. Any help would be appreciated.

Tried restore to earlier date but to no avail.

Back to floppy:

If problem with floppy drive is the cable maybe I can try one from an old computer to see what happens.

That would be the next place to try. All floppy cables are the same. Did the printer problems start at the same time? Do you have a real Windows CD or a restore CD from the computer maker?

If the cable switch produces no diferent outcome I would try a Linux Live CD to see if were hardware or software related. Any experience with those? Do you have a CD burner?Yes, the floppy and printer problems appeared within a day or so of each other.

No experience with Linux -

I do have cd burner.

This computer came with restore cd but I do have windows xp pro update disk that I bought two or three years ago for another desktop.Download a copy of SLAX (it's pretty SMALL) and burn as an ISO to CD with Nero, etc. and BOOT with it. Nothing will be written to HARD drive at all, but see if your floppy behaves normally.
