Solve : Forcing 1066Mhz RAM?

Answer»

Hey, does anyone know if a Motherboard can be forced to run DDR2 1066 RAM at 1066Mhz that it was not designed for? (That's a mother board that supports 1066 but does not support the brand of memory)no ddr that i know of comes 1066?
and do you mean changing the TIMINGS of the memory or the mobo?
both will be found in the biosQuote from: Accessless on May 15, 2008, 02:28:51 PM

i dont quite understand, if your motherboard supports DDR2 1066, then any brand of DDR2 1066 will work in it. the brand does not matter. If only it were that simple. It's actually a case of whats on the QVL (Qualified Venders List). My RAM is not even listed at any speed. Its a M3A32-MVP Deluxe/WiFi-AP motherboard you can find it by product searching it on the ASUS website and clicking the QVL download on the left hand side of the screen.

So my actuall question is can I just tell my bios to ignor the RAM brand and run it at its correct speed?
Just because it is not listed on the QVL does not mean it will not run...
Unfortunately the only way to find out is to test it.
The BIOS shouldn't have anything to do with this as if they tailored the BIOS to only run QVL products they would be open to a ton of lawsuits...Ok, I finaly found the part of my bios that modifies the Memory settings (it twas CLEVERLY hidden in a manual overclocking sub menu). My bios is huge . Anyway I tried setting the memory from Auto to 533Mhz and the pc failed to start and reset the bios to defaults (I'm glad they invented a bios that resets on startup errors. The old ones had to be reset manualy and were a pain in the BACKSIDE every time you picked a wrong setting).

Anyway I don't know if I just changed the RAM settings from 400-533 or if I changed them from 800-533.
I don't really want to just tell it to run at 1066 incase it is doubling it. (I.e. setting to an actuall speed of 2132 due to the fact its double somthing or rather memory).

[Edit]

Nope just checked diffinatly set RAM from 400Mhz to 533Mhz. Do I need to change the memory voltages or somthing?I strongly recommend you use only the RAM on your QVL (Qualified Venders List).

Even like spec'ed ram will not work right in your system. It sounds crazy but they put out that list for a reason.

I built a system without the "right" RAM and it worked fine...for about 2 weeks and than blue screens and lock ups. I pulled the RAM I got and put in the RAM they had on there list and gold. The machine is rock solid and works great.

Been there done that got the Tee shirt!
accessless, i dont understand what you are doing. you said the board supports 1066 RAM, if the board supports 1066 RAM, then it will run it at 1066mHz; you do not need to tinker with any settings. what is your RAM make/model and quantity?

i dont agree. my RAM brand doesnt show up on my QVL and it works like a charm. yes i know, i could have got lucky and so forth, but if everybody listened to this advice then they would have a very limited spectrum of RAM to choose from.
Geil Black Dragon PC2-8500 1066Mhz 4GB Kit (4x1GB). I'm shamed to say it was the coolest looking.

I don't know why its not running at 1066Mhz. Just won't, even if I tell it to.

Just to add:

Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe AMD 790FX Socket AM2 PCI-Express DDR2 Gigabit LAN Firewire Motherboard

AMD Phenom 9500 Quad Core AM2 2.2GHz 2MB L2 Cache ProccessorSolved the mystery, the motherboard only supports 2 modules at 1066Mhz. I have 4 and therefore have to run them at 800Mhz.

I don't know about anyone else but I'm never buying an ASUS motherboard again. DOES NOT DO WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN!

Whats on the tin:

Wifi - doesn't work

Memory - Native DDR2 1066 Support, the First Native DDR2-1066 AMD Platform. This motherboard is the first AMD® platform with native DDR2 1066 support. It provides faster data transfer rate and more bandwidth to increase memory data transfer rate and computing efficiency, enhancing system performance in 3D GRAPHICS and other memory demanding applications. *DDR2 1066 is supported by some of the AM2+ CPUs only. Refer to www.asus.com for the supported CPU models.

Now this isn't exactly true now is it? If you over clock the memory and only use 2 modules it is. I wouldn't like to even try 8Gb could be a fire hazard

Processor - At least it actually supports a Quad core CPU

Graphics (not onboard but this is good) - This Motherboard is Quad CrossFire Ready... am i the only person thinking *censored*? seriously why would I pay for 4 graphics cards? Graphics cards havn't even gone into the realms of multiple cores yet and now I need four?

Stack Cool 2 - This is amazing, a heat pipe that covers only 2 memory moduals and comes with a crappy optional fan of which breaks when you try to apply it...
The model of the board rang a bell. I contacted a friend who finished his build a month ago with the same board and he is running 4G of OCZ RAM @1066 with no problems or issues at all.

BTW he's an Architect and it's his AutoCad machine. So what? Do I need to file a lawsuite towards ASUS? What does it all mean?
