Solve : Format process keeps starting over?

Answer»

I am installing Xp on a micron pc millenia for my kid to use for games.  I had to put a new drive in and when it get to the part where it will reboot it starts all over again!  What am i doing wrong?Without more information I would onlyu GUESS.
Do you have any a floppy boot disk? Or can you make one on another PC?
Ypu could try to boot is with a gloppy and run some diagnosstics on the hard drive.
Did the new drive come with INSTALL and diagnostic software?

It keeps booting to the CD. Do you see a message that says "press any key to boot to CD" at startup? If so dont press any keys. You may need to set your boot order in BIOS to boot to the hard drive first. Instead of making us guess, please tell us EXACTLY what you are doing, how you are doing it, and what the result is.I am installing WINDOWS Xp Home Edition on a Micron Pc Millenia.  Windows setup starts.  Choose install on partition1, NTFS quick format.  It goes through the installation and when it gets to the countdown to restarting the pc to finish the installation, it restarts and instead of going to drive it restarts the whole process over again from cd.  I'm not doing anything wrong.  I've installed Xp on alot of dells and hp but never a Micron.  Theres something i got to change in setup utility but i've never done anything like thisHaven't used a Micron in years, but I used to own a bunch of them. Nothing unusual with OS installation with Microns. If you get through the installation and then the system reboots to the cd, try removing the cd just before the countdown finishes.I tried that and It said "A disk read error occurred"  press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.  Is it not wanting to read my drive.  How do i set up my Bios on a Micron?  I know how to get there but i don't know what first boot device and second and third should be.  It takes a single IDE drive, a floppy, cd-rom, and a seperate dvd-rom.  If that matters.Well, then I guess the install process hasn't completed. Boot order is the same on all systems. If you have a floopy and you think you're going to want to boot from it, it's first, optical drive next (cd or dvd), hd next. But it really doesn't matter unless you want to boot to something other than the HD. If the system does not see bootable media in the floppy or cd it will then go to the hd. Some people leave the hd first because it speeds the boot time a LITTLE and move the others ahead of it if and when they need to boot to something other than the hd.should the drive be master or slave? should the drive be master or slave?
Make it  master. If a CD-Drive is on the same cable, make it slave.
BTW, you can get a HDD diagnostic at Seagate that fits on a floppy.

would it matter what rom i install windows from?  B4 it wasn't even showing the dvd rom so i was using the cd rom but i just stuck the disk in the dvd and it started the setup process? Until you get this to work, just use one CD drive.
Fully disconnect the other one.
Ab disconnect any other hardware that is not needed, such as a USB hub, a wireless interface, extra VGA card, Joystick card, sound card, external hard drive, printer, cash register, GPS or Mister Coffee.
For the install you should only have a one hard drive, one CD drive, keyboard, mouse and VGA card. If you have an internal VGA, only use it, any other video card or video adapter or TV tuner or any card not vital to the basic install should not be in the machine at this time.

Some computers are picky. Make sure that you put the CD in the master drive. It's usually the one on top.

It said "A disk read error occurred"  press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.  Is it not wanting to read my drive.

Try this:
Boot to the CD and follow this order
1. Delete partitions
2. Create a new partition
3. Format your partition (to set up windows on the selected item press enter). Don't use the quick format option. K so this is what i did. I unplugged the IDE1 channel  cable that i was using for the HDD.  I unplugged the CD-rom from the IDE2 channel cable cause that was not the master on the cable the DVD-rom was.  I installed the HDD as the slave on the IDE2 channel cable and went into bios and changed it to: first boot :IDE2, Second: Floppy and just disabled the third.  Then i tried the reinstall and deleted the partition that was already on there and started fresh.  Did normal format not quick and is working fine!!!  Almost done with install on final stages now.  So my last question is could my IDE1 slot on my MOBO be bad and if so is there a way to check it?   Thanks to everyone for the help. After you are done with the format and install as it is you can test IDE 1 this way:
Set the HDD as master on IDE1...leave IDE2 out of the equation for now...

Cabling:

MB=======================================Slave=========Master.

Reboot and see if the system boots.
Remember to make the appropiate BIOS changes.
