Solve : front page links not uploading?

Answer»

:-?

Hi,  I am a newbie and trying to  build a web site with front page.  I am trying to upload but the links between pages that I have made which show correctly before I upload show as a red x in a box when I upload my index.html page.  Can you help me please.  My web site is http//home.iprimus.com.au/sherons/sunset ceremonies.

I am attempting to upload via my isp using their 'upload' facility.

I sure would appreciate any help.

Thanks
Sheron

  • Avoid using spaces in file names or URLs
  • You won't be seeing the images, because they're not where your code says they are - have you uploaded them?  Where is the index_files folder?
Hi and thanks for the post
I am struggling with this as I am new but determined!
I followed your advice.

First I removed all my uploaded files to start from scratch again.

I then renamed all the files leaving out the _ and renaming and saving again as simply page1 etc

I then redid the links and they appear in Front Page when I test them cntrl&click they worked in Front Page.

I then reuploaded all files but when I came to upload the index_files folder it would not allow me to upload the complete file,  I had to OPEN it and the individual file items were listed so I looked to see what was 'missing' when the file was uploaded, for instance on my Home Page the image001 was missing so I uploaded that seperately, but as the rest uploaded ok I did not add them.

Now, I have the links showing on my web site as empty boxes, the link names did not upload and the links do not work as they did when I tested them in Front Page.

Also now my image001 on my Home Page is a red cross although I uploaded the image.

Can you please help?

I sure appreciate any advise you can give.

Thanks
SheronYou may have uploaded the image, but the question is where to?  One image is supposed to be located at http://home.iprimus.com.au/sherons/sunset%20ceremonies/index_files/image002.gif - but there's nothing there.  (NB That '%20' represents a space - you really should take the space out of the name if you can.)

Looks like you need to create an 'index_files' folder, change to that folder, and THEN upload the images to that folder.

I'm shooting in the dark a bit here, because I NEVER use FrontPage.   thanks Rob,  I have the 'links' problem solved now...I will do as you suggest....

SheronGet away from using FrontPage as quickly as you can. It uses non standard extensions to it's code which aren't accepted by most ISP based or other free hosting. This can serve to confuse things.

Keep all filenames lower CASE. Sunset.jpg is not the same as sunset.jpg in the html world.

Try to avoid using spaces in filenames. Rather than my file.jpg, use my_file.jpg.

It's also wise to use a dedicated FTP client for uploading.

This may sound a little complicated but honestly, it's not and your web authoring life will be made much easier.Thank you Rob,  with your help I have achieved much this week.

You suggest I 'get away from Front Page asap...'  what do you suggest I use as I use Front Page because it is free and cost is a problem for me.

also

You suggest 'I get a dedicated FTP' .....likewise what do you suggest I do?

My current small problem is, I have put borders around my text boxes but I would like to get rid of the surrounding text box frame that shows.  Can you help me please?

thanks for everything
Sheron

I've just had a look at your HTML and it is absolutely horrible.  What a nightmare.  It would take me ages just to work through it and figure out which bit is which.  This is entirely FrontPage's fault.

Free HTML editor: NVu
Free FTP client: FTP Surfer

Produce some NICE HTML with NVu, and I would be more than happy to help you tweak bits (like the gap around the frame).Thank you so much Rob for your advise, I will do as you suggest and get NVu and re-build and upload.  This may take me some time!  But I will get back to you.  I KNOW what you mean about the gap in the frame it is horrible.

Thanks for all your help so far.

I feel good that I have achieved what I have as it sure is a learning experience.

SheronYou're welcome.  Feel free to come back with any other questions, and to let us know how you're getting on!last question on 'Front Page' as I now have NVu downloaded to figure out!

In Front Page I have a form with a SUBMIT button that I am trying to link with my email address.

But when I hold my mouse over the uploaded page SUBMIT button  the message says "mailto:[email protected]" but I get an error message when I click on it.  Also the arrow does not turn into a 'hand'.

From View Source on my web page I COPIED the infomation below.  Can you tell me why my link is not working?
