Solve : Gaming PC, First Timer, Need Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

Answer»

i am looking at building my own computer, based on graphics, with a slightly heavy lean torwards gaming, almost strictly single player.
and now, after a solid 8 hours of scouring the web, i have a few questions. mostly looking for your opinions.
after digging and digging, i finally found a decent tutorial/walkthrough/guide on how to build your own gaming PC, and have boiled down my prospects to a few choice picks.
i was wanting to know your opinions on these OPTIONS, or any options you would advise me to look at, again in regards to what I'm looking for.

the first board is the ASUS M4A79XTD EVO found here:

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3/M4A79XTD_EVO/#specifications

and the second board is the MSI 870-G45 AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard found here:

either or would be using the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Quad Core:

2 sets of the: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel Kit Desktop MEMORY Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ here:

1, maybe 2: SAPPHIRE 100328L Radeon HD 6770 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card found here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102940

thinking about the Thermaltake TR2 600W Power Supply:

http://www.xoxide.com/thermaltake-tr2-600w-power-supply.html

and the PSI Cyclone Case - Black for the case:

http://www.xoxide.com/psi-cyclone-case-black.html

So, as it stands, what are your opinions?? let me know, i want any and all inputs possible. Thanks!!!
A few changes:

  • ASUS boards are really good but if your budget allows, try looking for a higher range one that has USB 3.0
  • I've had a few bad experiences with Thermaltake PSUs, For a high quality one look at Corsair or Enermax
  • I strongly recommend getting a case from a big manufacturer (Antec, Coolermaster, Fractal Design .etc) That case does't appear to be WORTH the money, as it doesn't seem to have very good airflow or any features that I would expect for that price such as toolless entry/drive mounts - It also doesn't appear to be that well made.
Unless things have changed in the last couple years (I did a lot of research when I built my last pc) you are probably better off buying 1 video card for $200 than 2 for $100 a piece. Quote from: Berenost on May 29, 2011, 06:06:31 AM

Don't forget to include some kind of protection against lightning - you never know when it may strike!
You pretty much are all set to go-I just want to add that you might want to consider using a good thermal paste for your CPU heat DISSIPATION and maybe invest in a cooler that is more efficient than the stock cooler in the Phenom box.Quote

Is that all? Is this going to be a cheap PC? What is the budget?

If thou want to spend about $1500 for a high performance gamer. you need to do more that 8 hours of research. Maybe 80 hours of research. Interactive research. Like what you are doing here.

IMHO, if you want t o spend less that $750 for the whole system, you are better off just having a reputable company build one for you. They buy stuff in wholesale lots and they know what works and what does not. And they give a year or more warranty.

No.

It's computer parts. Not cancer treatment! On Sep 3 2011 I REVIVED this thread that had been dormant for 3 months by suggesting that the OP might want to consider lightning protection. I did that because the OP had just started a cheeky thread (now removed) begging for money to be sent to him via Paypal to replace his computer and monitor because his house had been "struck by lightning".

"I laughed sarcastically" is an understatement.
