Solve : Getting error message at startup regarding fan failure!?

Answer»

I have a 5-year-old HP pavilion, and it's worked quite well over the years. Today, however, it gave me a message that the system fan has failed, and that I should get it serviced to prevent damage to the system. I'm actually little nervous about using it now since I want to avoid damaging the system.

I installed the freeware Everest to check the temperature, and this is what is says:

- CPU40 °C (104 °F)
- SAMSUNG SP2504C43 °C (109 °F)

I also opened it up and used compressed gas to BLOW out dust. Once I started it back up the fans appeared to be working just fine. I also didn't get the warning message this time.

I restarted again to make sure the warning wouldn't come up again, but it did come up again.

So here are my questions:

- Anything I can do?
- Is the temperature OK?
- Is it dangerous to the system if I continue using my computer?
- If I need to get it serviced or get the fan replaced, would it be very expensive?

The system fan is usually the case fan. Not all systems have a case fan, mine does not and it seems to work OK.

You could install a montoring program (a good one is called Speedfan) which monitors temperatures and cpu and case fan speeds (and keeps a log of them) and can optionally give warnings if temperatures go over, or fan speeds go under, levels that you set, and also can shut the system down to prevent damage. If the fan stops in use, or repeatedly fails to start, you can consider getting a new one.

You have not said what type of "HP Pavilion" you have GOT, that model name was used for both DESKTOPS and laptops, so I am not sure what CPU you have. However the Samsung model number refers to a 3.5 inch hard drive, so I will assume it's a desktop. HP Pavilions from around 2006 used a variety of processors, and I don't think 40 degrees Celsius is too hot for any of them.

The Samsung hard drive is at 43 C and that is not too bad.

If it kept running long enough for you to install Everest and study the readings it sounds as if the fan is capable of running for a while at least. It may be that the fan is a bit SLUGGISH at first start which is giving rise to the warning. If you are nervous, you can install monitoring software as I mentioned above.

The fans themselves don't cost very much, 10 or 20 US dollars, the price of getting it fitted might be around the same. You can call a number of repair shops and get an idea. Of course the problem could be the fan controller on the motherboard, in which case either a new motherboard would be needed. With a 5 year old PC, many people might conisder getting a new computer.

Don't panic just yet, you may be OK just keeping an EYE on things.
