Solve : Getting NIC and video card to recognize their drivers?

Answer»

My husband has a Dell Dimension 2400
Pentium 4 2.53 GHz
512 KB
BIOS A03
He had a trojan I could not remove, so I reinstalled Windows XP from the Dell disk that came with his computer. This was Service Pack 1A. 2 problems:
1. The video display could not be optimized. Control Panel>Appearance and Themes> Display>Settings did not allow me to slide the bar to the right to improve resolution. Video CARD is integrated on motherboard, I think.
2. I couldn't get the NIC to work, even after I loaded the drivers from another disk that came with the Dell. I finally accidentally fixed the problem by uninstalling the NIC, reloading the drivers, and restarting the computer. The NIC was then recognized as new hardware. He has a Broadcom 4401 Integrated network adapter and a Broadcom 440X Extreme Ethernet Controller. After I got this feature working, I was able to connect to our LAN and the Internet. I installed Trend Micro Internet Security Pro, which required updating P. At this point I decided to fix the video display, but wound up disabling the monitor and losing the display in Normal Mode. I could not RESOLVE this problem through many fixes I tried.
3. I finally re-reinstalled Windows XP 1a from the Dell disk. Once again, I cannot get the Broadcom devices or the video card to recognize their drivers. Therefore I have no Internet access from that computer, and poor video resolution. I haven't yet tried uninstalling the NIC like I did the first time.
You need to install the driversI did! The NIC drivers are in c:\dell\drivers\(number). But even when I specify that drive path, I get the message that the driver isn't in there. I'm going to work on this tomorrow. You need to install it from there. Usually, it just extracts the driver if I remember correctly. You have to go to the folder and actually find the installerQuote from: reeder2 on August 30, 2009, 06:19:12 PM

Probably easier to get the drivers directly from Dell. Go to Dell Support and type in the Service Tag Number located on the back of the computer. Download and transfer to CD or flash drive and transfer to Dimension 2400. Then force Windows to use those drivers.it still does the same thing that I saidI finally did install the drivers for the video card and the Broadcom NIC. Now we have excellent resolution and LAN access. I reinstalled (re-re-re, etc) from the Dell drivers and utilities disk, but PAID more attention to the drivepath. I guess I used the wrong one. I wish I could explain exactly what I did differently this time, so other people could get some help from this, but anyway the problems are solved, so thanks. The path you listed above is only where the drivers are EXTRACTED to from the Dell utilities disc. You still have to install them. Once they are installed you can delete that Dell folder from your drive.I guess I installed them, then. Case closed. ThanksLightbulb moment. Just realized the problem with the NIC was that I was trying to install the wrong driver. Once I found the right driver, the problem was solved. It was easier to figure out this time because I installed the video driver first, making the display easier to read when I was looking for the right Broadcam.
