Solve : Graphics card is shorting system?

Answer»

Hey guys,

A friend of mine called me up and told me that his computer had just stopped working out of the blue. I told him to bring it over so i could take a look. With process of elimination I found that his graphics card(nV 8600gts) was causing the short. I tried it in both of his PIC-E SLOTS, and got the same result, the fans and lights coming on for about 1-2 seconds and then shutting off. He SAID that his computer was running fine for about 2 hours before it first shorted out. It worked fine for weeks before that, and 2 hours isn't really long enough to heat THINGS so much that it shorts.

If I replace that card with one of my 8800's or any other card it works fine. I think that rules out it being the power supply or its motherboard slots. I haven't tried putting his card in my system because I think that there is no real need to risk hurting my own system in some way. I have examined the card, took off the cooling fan, and tried to see any spot where it looked out of the ordinary.

My questions are... Does anybody know If there is any usual spot I should look at? Should I tell my friend to START searching for a new card? Any ideas of fixes/solutions to try, herbal remedies?

Thanks for any help guys!
-Jeffi'm wondering what brand is the nvidia card and how long it's been on hand. If warranty still applies, maybe he can get replacement card.you could try looking at the capacitors, look to see if they are bulging or LEAKING dielectric.mcxeb52!

MSI it was purchased from Newegg 1.4 years ago.
