Solve : H-P not booting up?

Answer»

Hello All. first post. i have a H-P pavillion 6730. its operating system is windows 98 second edition.
i checked my e-mail. (no surfing or down loading.) turned off putor. an hour LATER pressed the on button. it goes to the h-p logo and blue back ground. that is where it stops. tried it many times. same problem.
any ideas would be appreciated. thanks in advance. garyCould be a bad PSU, or motherboard, or the CPU has died. How old is the machine and what processor? Can you open it and look to SEE if the fans are spinning? What if you press the F2 button when you see the HP logo?machine is 5 years old. no problems to date. i can hear the fan running. should not be a heat issue in that it was off an hour when i restarted. (and only on then a few mins) tried f-2 and some one SAID to try f-8 for safe mode. so for all those initials you mentioned does that mean all my saved pictures would be gone?We don't know that your hard drive in involved at all. If not, then all the data is safe.

You will need to physically open the case to see if the fans are all TURNING . There will be one on the CPU, one (or more) in the power supply and maybe some case fans.

F2 gets to the BIOS/setup screen. F8 will boot into safe mode IF WIndows is functional and there are not electromechanical problems with the computer itself.

A replacement machine is only $36.50 delivered!

i put in the H-P recovery disc with no results. tried my windows 98 back up cd. and it would not start. no joy on f-2 or f-8.Magic?? opened it up. just one fan on the power unit. looked around. no bad smells. did not put cover back on.
turned it on and every thing is fine...
oh well. thanks much for the suggestions. dont know how opening it up fixed it. but.....Be looking out for other problems. Sometimes you can get a loose connection and things require handling (or at least in this case, looking). Thanks for posting back and congratulations on a job well done. great. and quick responses. will keep an eye on the power supply. some one mentioned they are not that great on h-p's and can be problematic. They can also be proprietary, meaning one off the shelf at the local computer store won't even work. That one is old enough you may be OK, but have a look at it while the case is open and see what is in there - manufacturer and wattage. If it is not a small form factor case you may be OK.

Here are some handy web sites for you:

NOTE: I just checked the web and you apparently have a 230w micro ATX power supply. Here is another vendor:
