Solve : Hard Disk Drives? |
|
Answer» Does anyone know why hard drives only come in four speeds? 5400rpm, 7200rpm, 10000rpm or 15000rpm.Historical and economic reasons. Each speed at one time represented the fastest commercially viable rotational speed, then as technology IMPROVED it was possible to go up to a higher speed. At that time competition meant that all manufacturers WOULD now be aiming for that new top speed. No point in going for an intermediate level, given that the motors etc would be more EXPENSIVE than industry standard parts. You see SIMILAR stratification in other parts such as RAM and CD and DVD read and WRITE speeds. |
