Although the is no reason you couldn't do it the other way around. The mere act of adding a slave device will not make the computer faster, but if you add a hard drive that is faster than your current then yes it could improve performance. The size of the hard drives isn't important, it is whether they're COMPATIBLE with your computer that MATTERS. (They probably are though.) Here is a guide that describes how to install a hard drive.
