Answer» I've alraedy performed a search here for this particular PROBLEM, here on this FORUM and have tried the information listed on the FAQ page which involves copying the file from the Operating System CD to the directory of the hard drive.
Here's the problem:
I can't expand the file because I have no access to the Windows directory on the drive in question.
If I do a DIR of the C: drive, I get the following error: An error occurred during directory enumeration.
When trying to do a repair of the os, there is no option to select a windows installation.
The initial error that comes up after reboot is that there may be a problem with the hard drive...and to HIT any key to continue. That's when I get the hal.dll error. The error also tells me the path to the file is as follows: /system32/hal.dll. Shouldn't it be more along the line of windows/system32/hal.dll?
Anyway...this is what I have tried:
1. Chkdsk /r and it never fully completes, but returns a message that there may be a problem with the hard drive. It gets about 45% through before it returns this error message.
2. I've also tried fixboot and fixmbr followed by chkdsk /p /r, however...after the chkdsk...I'm right back to where I started...receiving the same errors on boot.
I'm beginning to think the drive is TOAST, but if anyone here has any further recommendations...I'm all ears.
Thanks in advance... -Steve
Update...
Sorry everyone...but I just did a diagnostics on this drive using PowerMax...seems the drive is toast. I should've done this earlier...WOULD have saved me a whole lot of aggravation.
Thanks for taking a look, though.Well you took the correct steps...sorry 'bout the drive. It's okay...
Thanks for the reply. The owner of said hard drive has decided to buy a new computer...as opposed to just repairing or replacing the hard drive...go figure.Sorry i can't help in that department... I've learned one thing in doing this all these years..."give the people what they want"...
