Solve : hard drive swap? |
|
Answer» I have a Dell Vostro 1400 with the Intel SANTA Rosa (GM965) chipset (Intel® Core 2 Duo T5270, GMA X3100) that the motherboard has gone out on. Because I'm in the middle of writing my thesis and I don't want to mess with re-installing and configuring some specialized programs, I would really like to be able to run the programs on my HARD drive in another computer. My plan: buy a similar computer on EBAY, and swap my hard drive into the new computer. If the chipset base is the same (Intel GM965), but the processor is different, will this still work? Is there anything else I have to watch out for?No, you will not be able to boot to the OS. The hardware needs to be identical. If you were using XP you could do a REPAIR install - I'm not SURE what your options are with Vista. Why not just replace the mobo?was told it was too difficult to get at and am uncertain I want to try it myself. Can't decide which time-consuming option is best (or worst).I've never replaced a mobo in a laptop, but in a desktop it's pretty simple - less than 1/2 hour |
