Answer» Hey everyone! A friend of mine has had TWO hard DRIVES die on him in the passed two weeks. Both time he got the message BOOTMGR missing. I removed the bad hard drive and everything worked fine for a couple weeks then the second one did the same thing. So i removed it and now his computers still working with the one hard drive he has left. The one left is a newer hard drive and was luckily the one that had windows installed on it. The other two hard drives were older so they might have just died because of that reason but i want to ask if there would be anything that causes hard drives to die in quick succession besides old age. Before i removed the second hard drive, he was also having problems with his system shutting off randomly while playing games.Hmm.
My cousin had the same problem. He said it came from downloading corrupted files.
Like a fake demo of a game, infected textures, ect..
So, if ya wanna stay away from this, download avast!.
avast! Is an anti virus program that will stop you from downloading suspicious files. Hope i helped! That could be it, he does download alot of texture mods and other things for street fighter and other fighting games. And the hard drives that these files were saved on are the ones that died. Thanks for the REPLY, i'll check it out. But i would still like to explore this a bit further so please keep the answers coming people I'd check the hard drives on another system and use a tool such as crystaldiskinfo to check the S.M.A.R.T data on them for errors. You might find that these drives have no problem and the real problem was that your power supply was slowly dying and by removing each additional hdd that was weighing down the power supply you lessened its burden of a power load.
* Boot Manager missing when say drive C: has windows on it and drives D: and E: are just data STORAGE in which you first removed E: and then got the system to boot fine and then back to Boot Manager Error and then removed D: and then it worked again and then now your getting the same issue with your only drive left as C: as well as random game crashes to me points out a power supply may have slowly died on you.
I had a very similar situation happen in the past with a system with extra hard drives for storage and i actually triggered the situation by adding my 3rd drive for extra internal storage which was the tipping point in the life of the power supply. I removed the 3rd HDD and within a week later I was having to remove the 2nd HDD.
When I checked my voltages my 5V was 4.76 volts and my 12 volts was also really low at 11.18 volts. I replaced the power supply and the problem was fixed. That is a great explanation. Thank you! that was actually something i considered in the back of my mind but i shrugged it off because the psu isn't more than a few years old. It might just be the problem though. i'll have to get another psu to test it though. anyway, thank you for the help!SpeedFan will tell you the PSU's voltages...and it's Free...
