Solve : Hardware noise?

Answer»

Hello,

My computer is 4-5-years-old Microsoft XP, and its still running good, but the computer is making weird noises for the past few days. just 2 days ago its been making whistling sounds. and its amking like humming noises, loud and small back and forth. and i HEARD the humming noise back a few months, i;d say like 3-5 months ago and its stopped after i reset it.

But my dad says its only dust in the fan thats making the noise but i don't really believe him and my friends say that my hardware is about to die.

So could you tell me what to do or is my hardware really going to die.
the last time i reformatted my computer was just at the start of September.
My friends also TOLD me that a normal hardware lasts for 3 years and their SURPRISED that my hardware is still running.

Just so you know, i use my computer most of the time and it was custom built.

if you need anymore info, please let me know.Any noise like the one you've described is bad news.   It could be caused by an out-of-balance fan on your processor heatsink or in your power supply unit but then it could also be caused by a failing hard drive.   Noises tend to be precursors for minor or major disasters.

I suggest that you investigate it almost immediately and ensure that your backup is up-to-date.

Good luckI agree, Back everything up right away to be on the safe side. try to listen closer with the side panel off the computer, remember to use proper ESD precautions. to try and PINPOINT where the noise is coming from.Omg my computer is making grinding noises ALOT OF IT!!!!!!!

and its the grinding of like a motorcycle execpt not that loud. Its ocmping from the back of the computer.

i'm going to open it up today after i come from schoolThis may sound silly, but if you very care fully remove your graphics card and cpu fans clean them carefully and PLACE them back in the nosie may stop, is your hard drive hanging freely inside your case it could also be this I'm surprised no one metioned this...

Be very careful when opening your computer case.  Make sure it is disconnected from its power source...you may also want to disconnect any peripherals you have attached to it.

Once you've done the above...open the case and protect your computer from Electrostatic discharge by making sure you are grounded by using a wrist strap or simply touch th exposed metal of your computer's case.

Once you make sure you're grounded...used "canned air"...not a vacuum cleaner to clear the dust and debris from inside the case...especially around the vents and the fans...don't forget the power supply fan, either.

While you have it open...make sure all of the cards and connections are properly seated...and look for any wires that may be interfering with the fan(s).  If your computer is making a grinding noise...it may be a good idea to locate the exact source of the noise and get back to us so we can recommend a replacement for the part causing the noise.

I hope you've found this information helpful...please...keep us posted... Quote from: The Saviour on October 03, 2007, 08:36:03 AM

And be very carefull ! thanks man, i just bought a compressed air can, and i'm going to do what you just said on Friday because then i have no h/w over the weekend and if my computer messes up, i have time to buy another one and also i'm doing a BIG project and i don't want to try to fix my computer before i start it, so i'm finishing it up as fast i can because i don't want to loose any hard worked documents.

thanks a lot.

I'll let you guys know what happens on Friday night or Saturday or just mabye befor ethe weekend ends.

once again

thanks for the tipswell, it turns out that my graphics card's fan is wearing away, like its low and its wobbly and i was preatty close from the blue screen of death.

Graphic's card is Nvidia Geforce4 MX 440

so i also dusted my computer and boy i'm happy i did it now then before.
It was extemely dusty, especially in my CPU heat absorber and my CPU fanIf you have a decent Computer repair shop in your area i would take the vid card out and travel to the shop...they should be able to match up a replacement fan for it and you could get a bunch more use out of that card before eventually replacing it...
