Solve : has my monitor had it??

Answer»

Happy new YEAR to you all.
My monitor flashes on and off at boot.
This started about 5 days ago after about 3 minites it stops and is ok for the rest of the day.
It now takes longer to settle down, I thught this mite be the graphics card.
But i have tried 2 outher computers conected to the monitor and also diffrent cables
digital and analog.
If i boot the computer with out the monitor conected, and then conect it later it still flashes on and off for some time.
The make and model of computer seems irevelent but they are both win xp pro.
The monitor is View Sonic VX910 model no VS10162.
Power supply is mains input.
Any help please Mopy.Since i am guilty of mostly ASKING question rather than contributing by posting a few answers i would like to start off the new year by offering my two cents. Please take it with a grain of salt because as good as i am compared to most of the people that i actually know with computer help needs i am by no stretch of the imagination in the same ball park as my CH comrades.

So here goes:

First off you didn't mention make model and type of monitor. Based on what you said i am picturing a CRT instead of an lcd. Under certain circumstance i think that the CRT would behave as you discribed if it was one of the following: Old, Cold, tired but not fired.

Cold meaning the room temp is colder than most of the time in my experience results in less than perfect performance. i have seen similar results if the video card is old and or cold. After they warm up they are like an old girlfriend: willing to play like they used to.
Since i have far more monitors than one Hopi should admit to i change mine out quickly to see how the newer one perform. If the perform well then i figure the other one is ready for the gift pile. Believe it or not that are so folks who would love your flicker rather than there fun house mirror.

Hope this helps.

i would also suggest updating drivers because they are usually free and fix many things.

Hope this is of some help to you.

Happy new year!Quote from: Kryptonite on JANUARY 03, 2010, 03:10:04 AM

ViewSonic VX910 is a 19" LCD monitor

Sounds like the backlight or inverter is dying...

To test if the LCD panel is actually working, shine a strong light on it. If you can see stuff on the screen faintly (in between the "flashes") then a repair job is called for in my opinion.

This is the monitor i have.
And yes i can see all when a light is shoon in.
Is this a replasement job or repair job, replacment about £100
Thanks Kevin.i probably should have googled the model number before guessing what it wasn't....no excuses just anxious to want to contribute if i can.No problem mate thanks for the reply.

A repair firm would probably charge such a big percentage of the price of a new monitor that you may not think it is worth it. I guess you are in the UK like me, since you mention £s. On the web I see one US firm charges a flat fee of $145 to fix any fault on a 19" monitor (except for a new panel). They charge much less to supply a replacement part e.g. $75 for an inverter board or $50 - $70 for backlights, but you need to be sure you know what the problem is and how to replace the part. I imagine that if you went to a UK firm the the NUMBERS (in pounds) would be a bit smaller but not much. These things are like TVs - these days, for a punter, there's no point in having a repair job done on a cheaper model. Especially if you were thinking of upgrading.

Having said that, you could give Techno-Mart in Harrow a ring.

http://www.techno-mart.co.uk/

They say repairs start at £39 + VAT and they don't charge for an estimate (no fix, no fee) & if you are near enough to drop it off & collect it you could save the carriage charges.

And/or check out yellow pages & compare

some problems in the hardware is costly to repair, you could buy another part cheaply ............Many thanks for your help everyone Please consider this thread now closed.
Thanks Kevin. (UK)
