Solve : HD data retrieval: elementary question? |
|
Answer» I suspect everyone older than grade school knows this, but I was never quite certain and couldn't find it in the faq. If I have data in my hard drive, DELETE it, run it through the recycle bin and empty the RB, is that data actually removed? I suspect it is not gone, but merely marked to allow overwritingYes. Quote If so, can it be retrieved?Yes. The less computer was used after deleting, the BETTER chance of retrieving the file. Quote Or, truly erased?Yes. There are some programs, called "file shredders", which will simply overwrite deleted file several times, MAKING it's harder to recover. Some pro places still can do it...Thank you, Broni: Now what I wondered about is confirmed. Easy future plan for me: keep doing as I always have, never leave anything on the hard drive too important to loose. Fortunately, I've never needed to put anything on a HD personal or financial. If I burn up my HD, it's a nusaince and may require spending money, but no other loss. I FOUND one of your comments interesting: if file shredders must overwrite several times, that suggests some kind of data layering to me. Which, in turn, tells me the the technology must be pretty good that prevents old data, (layers?), from interfering with fresh data. Somehow seems like potential contamination of the new data to me. But I am no expert. I'd rather the HD behaved like a stainless cooking pan in the kitchen: it gets dirty and I go wash it with soap and water and start over. Thanks again, Dennis I keep all my HDD's...even when i donate equipment.Good idea. I wouldn't send out any personal discarded HD either....just in case I left some account number or something on it. Which I try not to do anyway. Dennis |
