Not really sure if this is where this belongs, but here goes..

When I try to restart my computer sometimes it will look as if the monitor is idle (when the light is orange and the screen is black) which forces me to shut it off by the tower and turn it back on it goes back on correctly and everything but then I don't have internet. Most of the time I can just restart and it won't go idle and I will have internet and everything will work fine, but last night it did this and I got tired of it so I just left it on and went to sleep. Next morning I tried to restart it and it worked fine, but today it is doing the same thing because I had to restart. I just reformated today HOPING it was just a virus or SOMETHING, but its still doing it and now I can't do anything with the computer because there's no music or anything. Someone else suggested I flash my motherboard or whatever, but I don't have a floppy drive and am not EXACTLY sure how to do that.

Any way to fix this or am I s.o.l? Any questions or you think it will help me in any way please post. I wish I could say more on the whole problem, but its just so frustrating.

Thanks,
ChuChiA BIOS flash is a last resort so don't take your friends advice...

Post alot more info on your system specs, OS etc. and someone will be along shortly...I don't really know anything about it, I know when I reformated I put Windows XP Home on it.

Telling us that you installed XP doesn't tell us a whole lot ......

Was it XP you had on the machine before ?
Did you have a fully functional anti-virus installed before ?
Do you have SP2 installed as well as all the other updates?
The fact that you were able to load XP suggests to me that your CD-rom is working ?
What player do you normally use for music ?
Have you checked to be sure the drivers for your sound card are installed ?
How do you normally connect to the net ....... dial-up , cable or DSL ?
How old is you machine ?
I don't think I would be flashing the bios until you have exhausted all other possibilities.

Yes, I had XP on it before.

No, I didn't have an anti-virus thing.

No, I didn't have all updates.

Yes, my CD-rom works.

To play music I use limewire or Windows MEDIA Player.

Yes, I have my sound drivers.

I connect to the internet with cable.

My machine is about year to a year an a half old.ChuChi.... Do you get any error messages when you try to play something using WMP11 ?
What happens when you put a music cd in the cd drive ...... will it play ?
When you reinstalled XP , did you D/L SP2 as well as all the critical and other updates from MS ?
If you click start/run ....then type cmd and press enter ....... a new box will appear ......... type dxdiag and press enter ......... a diagnostic window will open ........ now click on the sound tabs ( one at a time and run the test ) do this for all the sound tabs that are listed and note the results ....... and let us know.

No, I don't get any errors, music plays fine, no I didn't download anything because I don't have internet. I did what you said and it said my sound card does not support hardware buffering, but all tests were successful.Quote

Did you really format and do a clean install of XP or did you just re-install XP (dirty install)?
Many people confuse these things.
