Solve : Help Overclocking?

Answer»

I would like to overclock my cpu and need some assistance. I have an ABIT AV8 VIA K8T800Pro Socket 939 Motherboard - AGP8X, ATI X1600 pro 512 mb vid card, win xp, 550 watt power supply, 2.5 gb ddr 400 3200 Ram, & AMD FX 64 3500.
That CPU does not exist.
Is it an Athlon FX, or an Athlon 64 3500+?
Or something completely different?
Have you done overclocking before?
Why do you want to do it?
It's a dangerous thing when not done with care. You should first google for some basic information about overclocking and check out some overclocking sites. We have no idea exactly what you know. What is not fast enough with that processor that you want to overclock it? What type of cooling are you using, etc.Overclocking might be good for that setup...that way 3 weeks later you can go out and get an even faster processor since you'll probably need one. It's a Athlon 64 3500+...sorry
I would like to learn how to overclock for gaming purposes....my cpu heatsink/fan (it has copper tubes on both sides) is from AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ socket 939.
I can look up the model when I get home.
How do I get started? Here are 1,430,000 starting points. Read through the first fifty or so to get a grasp of the basics. If you don't understand what you are doing, why, and what can happen with your actions you will just ruin equipment.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+overclockPersonally, I'm afraid to OC. I spent good money on my CPU, and I don't feel like melting it.

Just run out and get the Athlon 64 X2 4400+. That way:

a) your cooling unit will match (yay!)
b) you'll be running a dual core 2.2Ghz system.

And in my opinion, gaming doesn't usually stress out your CPU so much (especially not a 2.2Ghz, yet). Unless you're playing incredibly new games with ultimate graphics, your CPU should be fine. It's your GPU and RAM you should be upgrading (what are they, BTW?).

Anyway, here's a basic guide to OCing:

Be warned, it's dangerous.

Please take not of that, and what others have said.
It can be dangerous, so if you really want to do it then be careful and take it slowly.
I also agree with rockerest, the CPU isn't so important in games unless it is the limiting factor. And what is the only thing that matters?OK, I'll bite.

You have a decent processor and a ton of RAM.
Your video card is mainstream, mid-shelf, etc.

Instead of reading an OC tutorial while you simultaneously torch your RIG, think about upgrading your video card.

Here's a comparison chart that will illustrate where your card is, in the PECKING order.

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/131Thanks for the info everyone. It LOOKS like I will buy a new Graphics card. I have one problem, I need a new mobo so I can go PCI express...lol.
It's NEVER free. There is still some very powerful AGP cards still being made so you really dont need to buy a whole new mobo.
have a look and see- http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?Sort=1&Nav=|c:318|&Recs=30Quote
And what is the only thing that matters?
The GPU of course.
LOL not - don't get me started on that again.
The CPU is just less important in most cases than the GPU and RAM, amongst other components.

As stones said, there are still powerful cards for AGP.
PCI-E is more future proof though.
Your graphics card is the limiting factor here, so that's the thing to upgrade for better performance.
