Solve : Help with narrowing down a problem?

Answer»

I'm having either memory or overheating issues. I have 2 Ram chips 1 512 the other a 256. I ran a memory test and it said there was a problem and to narrow down the faulty chip to preform the test with them separately. The memory test came up fine with them separate but does not give any information about what to do next. I read a post that said to open the cover and point a house fan into it and see if it it makes a difference in performance, which it did. I was also told I need to reconfigure my BIOS to adjust the fan settings that it may not be running at full capacity.

Here is my system info

Any help with resolving this problem would be appreciatedif the fan helped, then it is an overheating issue. are all your fans running in your computer? is your CPU heatsink clean? All my fans seem to be working and clean, I did notice when i was testing the smaller chip that the fan seemed to be running slower and faster with the larger chip, the temperature without the fan read 42 degrees. Is there a way to maybe change the speed settings it is GREYED out in bios and i cant find any way to adjust settings. ( there was a very tiny bit of dust, I do clean them 2-3 times a week, Hardwood floors in the house so we are always dusting and i am very carefull when cleaning it)

what do you mean by "chip"? do you mean the CPU?

what do you use when you clean your comp?(chip) Sorry I meant the Ram Sticks- When preforming the memory test on them separate for the 512 the fan would run really fast, and for the 256 it would run slow but the memory test came back with no errors when just running them separate but reported a error when testing them both installed, as far as cleaning I completely remove the fans and blow out with the aresol duster and wipe with a soft foam brush, as far as the CPU I use the duster at the 6inch distance it says on the can holding straight up so that it doesn't blow moisture in it.this fan your talking about, where is it located? well probably he was reffering to d 512mb ram "chip" and the 256mb ram "chip"Well I have been communicating with AMD Tech guys VIA Emails which is a slow process
So far they have said its not a overheating problem if my Temperature stays below 98degree and it usually runs at 42degree

Maybe the Memory Test I am using isn't up to par, I am using MemTest3.6 a product of HCI Design. I just emailed AMD a reply they wanted to know the power supply wattage which is a Bestec 250-12Z REV. D and if I had Cool'n'Quiet enabled but I cannot find any options for a Cool'n'Quiet setting

Also the fan I am referring to is the CPU fan, which I  thought would run at the same speed no matter what RAM I had in. Both RAM Sticks are from the same manufacture but I have also noticed in other discussions a brief statement that using different size RAM is not a good thing any opinions about having a 512 and 256 running together? How many drives total are in this machine ? ?
250W PSU's are pretty old and you may indeed be underpowered...

Borrow a known good one and swap it in there and re-run MemTest to see...Jimbob, Is it possible that you are mixing Fahrenheit and Celsius temps in your post. If your 42 is Celsius that is quite high. If it is Fahrenheit that is only 10 degrees above the freezing point and even with all fans (and maybe a few ice cubes  ) i doubt you would get an operating temperature below ambient room temperature. So unless your operating it in a meat LOCKER i feel your "42 degrees" has to be Celsius in which case I'd say your too hot. truenorth No its reading 42degree C- and the AMD Tech guy that replied said this:

DEAR Customer,

Thank you for contacting AMD Customer Care.

The max temperature for your processor is 90degree Celsius. What is the temperature you noticed?

Which I replied was 42*C And he replied

Thank you for contacting AMD Support.

42 degrees are not to much. Probably it is not a overheating problem. Which operating system do you use? Is Cool'n'Quiet enable? Which version of chipset driver and Bios do you have? How much Watt have your power supply?

I have not been able to find any cool'n'quiet setting anywhere in the BIOS. Power Supply is the original as far as I know, it is a hand me down computer from my brother when he got a new one, still waiting for there responce its a slow process communicating with them.

Another Tech guy I'm waiting for a reply from said that the difference size Ram maybe the problem to make sure I am running in Dual Channel Mode that they need to be mirrored, that they need to be in corresponding slots, which there is only 2 slots so he wants my motherboard brand to see if it supports dual channel mode. Haven't heard back from him yet either.
