Solve : High Pitch Whining?

Answer»

Hello,

I currently own a Dell Dimmension 4600 with an intel pentium 4 proccessor and windows xp home edition. I have owned this COMPUTER for about 5-6 years now and just recently it started MAKING a high PITCH whining SOUND that seems to get higher when the processor works harder. I don't know what could be causing this and would appreciate any help given.

Thank youit could be a fan that NEEDS to be replaced or a harddrive that needs to be replaced.

that makes me suspect the CPU fan. is this an aftermarket CPU heatsink or is it a stock heatsink?Yeah a fan with a broken bearing would be a very likely candidate for that kind of noise. To determine which fan it is you can press gently on the center of the fan with the eraser end of a pencil to see if the whining stops. Don't stop it for any great length of time.
If you are careful replacing the fan is something you can do yourself.
You'll need a set of jewelers screwdrivers Phillips head.
Once removed take it to a computer store and use it to match up a replacement fan.

As always when working inside the case remove all power sources and take anti-static precautions...
