Solve : homers help with raid? |
|
Answer» OK that all MAKES sense. Thank you. You keep saying terabyte drives, i plan on it but i WILL fill them up Quick!!! i asked how many drives can i fit and your reply was how many can my motherboard fit. Does that include the pci cards with multiple slots? if so i can fit quite a few as well as the 6 my motherboard has. What are these raid controller cards i keep seeing? What exactly do they do and why would i need one? i also asked how it works to add new drives and you replied i would have to add them to my raid array. What does that mean? Will it wipe out my DATA when i do it? On a somewhat different plain is there a way to use this raid array with USB drives? that way i could just add stackable drives and a multi port usb hub like the system ultra offers. would something like that work? that is ideal because i could just keep adding more and more drives with limited input to the motherboard itself. what do you think? buy the way, i just wanted to say thanks. i know these may sound like stupid questions to you but the info is very helpful and i do appreciate it. as it says next to my name i am a newbie and could use all the help i can get.Welcome Aboard Don. Just a suggestion but you may want to change your user name also as the spambots will fill your inbox in no time...they lurk on Forums such as these.thanks. i took your advice. do you have any suggestions for my problem? i noticed it SAID genius next to your name.Quote You keep saying terabyte drives, i plan on it but i WILL fill them up Quick!!! how quick and how much storage space do you need? it seems to me it might be a good idea to buy a server case. all these HD's that you have, are you simply filling them up and then removing them, or are you keeping them in the comp? and one last question, these DVD's that you are copying to your comp, are you compressing them so they dont take up so much space? *EDIT* ive read a bit on this DROBO storage device. it seems like it would work well in your situation. i believe it would be better then setting up/rebuilding RAID arrays. http://www.drobo.com/ Yes i have been compressing the DVDs but not by much. i like the high quality and haven't been able to figure out how to compress them and still get top quality. as for how much space i actually need, well, i have no clue. i get a ton of DVDs, tons of music and id like to be able to save a lot of pictures as well. i need a system that i can just keep adding on to as time goes on with out spending 10 grand on a server. i like the link you gave me. that seems like a viable option. i bought a linksys or dlink ( i forget right now which one) anyway it doesn't really matter. its a network attached box with 2 usb ports on it so i can just hook up a few of my external drives for a place to start the backup process. i also got acronis true image software. it seems pretty good but i haven't used it yet. i have read good things though. if you have an opinion id appreciate it. i also bought a 5 port sata multiplier from addonics. that should keep me going for a while. any thoughts would be appreciated. the new hardware i got i only bought because i found them super cheep and it will keep me going for a while until i figure out a more permanent setup. as you can probably tell I'm not really a computer guy, but i do enjoy these opportunities to LEARN more and don't mind doing the work. Thanks again |
