Solve : Horrible DVD/CDR and Removable Drive problem?

Answer»

I hope this is the proper area for this line of questioning.

Edit: right now, I am at the point where I would be willing to use my restoration disk and lose tons of data, but A) I of course have somehow misplaced it and B) I doubt it would work anyway since I can't get the drive to properly read from CDs anyway. ::Sigh:: There has GOT to be a way to fix this. It DOES aknowledge that the drives exist. They just aren't accessable for some unknown reason.

Anyway, I am having a strange problem. It seems like two or THREE problems, but they are probably related.

1. My DVD/CD R Drive has stopped working properly. It won't read anything that is put into it properly, be it a game CD or DVD or a movie DVD. The icon, when a game disk is in it, appears as a "broken link" kind of icon if you know what I mean. I will post a screen shot. Strangely enough, the computer claims that the device is "working properly".

2. I keep getting an error message whenever I try to access my external hard drive saying that the drive is not accessable and that access is denied.

3. I am also getting the same error message as described in number 2 when I try to hook my Mp3 player up to my PC. So its as if there is something wrong with anything that could be seen as "removable storage".

This only started happening a few hours ago. I restarted my computer, and boom, I had the problem. I had been playing the game "Oblivion" just fine a few hours before, and a few hours before that, I had no trouble accessing my Seagate external hard drive. I would certainly appreciate help in CORRECTING this fairly serious problem.

Screen shot of the icons found in "My Computer". The one circled in read is the external drive, the one circled in black is the DVD/CD R with a disk inside it (Knights of the Nine Oblivion Expansion Pack disk). Also, is my disk drive supposed to be listed under "removable storage" while the one that is actually removable storage is up with the C drive icon?

This one is of the access denied error message I get when I try to access my Seagate.

And here are my DVD/CD R properties claiming that everything is working fine. It also shows what kind of disk drive it is.

Anyway, I would appreciate any help I can get in correcting this serious problem. Thank you in advance.

-------------------------------------------------------If the optical drive is having issues Windows by nature will also struggle with reading /assigning drive letters to other drives...
To diagnose this remove the dvd drive and try it in another machine...if it still has issues then it needs to be replaced.

And if I replace it, if that is what is needed, everything else will function properly?

I just don't get how it could work before a restart and then stop working after a restart, if its a problem with the disk drive itself. As my screen shot above shows, the drive does indicate what disk is inside it. If I put a DVD copy of "The Birds" in it, it shows in the icon that "The Birds" is in the drive. If I put my Oblivion disk in there, it shows that Oblivion is in the drive. It just doesn't read it or show the proper icon. Instead, it shows that "broken link" looking icon.

I hope its a simple matter to put it on my old computer. I will have to take the old one out of my old PC to do this. I hope I do not screw anything up even further. Thanks for your suggestion. Here is some further INFO. I took the advice of the troubleshooter, and uninstalled and then reinstalled the plug and play drivers, which of course did not help. But when I did that, the icon for the drive looked like this until I clicked on it:

Does this have any special significance other than the obvious fact that the drive is not working right?Have you tested it in another machine yet ? ?

No, not yet, sorry, for me that is going to be a major production, so I have to wait until tommorow, but in the mean time, I have been trying other things. I will post again once I have given it a shot. Thanks again.

Edit: I have discovered that it DOES work while in diagnostic mode. Do you think that I should still try it on my old PC? So this must be some sort of error. Its GOT to be fixable. I just need to know HOW to fix it. I am also getting a strange error message when I use msconfig to change the start up options saying that I may need to log into an administrator account to make changes, yet this IS my administrator account, and I have no others at this time. The changes seem to get made anyway, though. How is the CDRom listed in Device Manager ? ?
Right click it and select Remove and re-boot...
This may or may not make a difference.Well, its all moot now. I discovered, through my Acer "Empowering Technology" program that I had a partition set aside so that I could recover the factory shipped state of the PC without a disk. I WENT ahead and did that and everything is working fine. TY for taking the time to try to help me, Patio. You're more than Welcome...stop by anytime !
