R0SSYou can't repair a HDD. The moment you remove the casing, you will destroy it. Quote

My NEIGHBOUR REPAIRS hard drives, I will ask him for some details.I see an occasional post from people wanting to "fix" these with no idea what they are trying to do.

The danger of some DIY forums is that OCCASIONALLY someone will encourage this type of behavior. This is just a warning for those who think it's something simple and easy that can be fixed. It's not. Aside from Fed's neighbor it should ALWAYS be sent to a specialist if the data is that important and money is not an issue. Quote

He may replace the IDE controllers, but he can not open the casing without specialized equipment. Such as a dustfree environment.I guess he has all the right stuff Raptor, it's his job, not something he does in his garage.
I WANT to learn a little more than, 'they have really strong magnets in them'.
Like everyone else, I'd just buy a new one if mine failed.I was under the impression that your neighbour had a dust-free garage.  I think he works in a dust free lab.
I'll let you know if & when I find out more.
He's a little guarded about his work, maybe he works for ASIO or something.
