Solve : how much power does an 8800gt consume?? |
|
Answer» http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127329 Some guy (the first review on the list as of now) says he has... Quote p4 2.8 ghz prescott w/ht, 2x1gig ddr2 @ 533mhz dual channeled, 200 gb 56000 rpm WD hard drive, 80 gb 5600 rpm samsung HD, 8800gt OC, Sony DL dvd/cd +- recorder, cd drive, dell 305W PSU. and he said the 8800gt card runs perfectly fine?!!! The 305W PSU was stock dell psu. Now that makes me think my compaq's 300W stock PSU can RUN the card? Given that guy's configuration (although with 8800GTS substituted for the GT), newegg's power supply calculator recommended 473W of power. My configuration, with the 8800GTS instead RECOMMENDS an 439 W power supply?!!!! Just wondering how much 8800gt graphics card consumes........................ i'd have thought you needed at least some quality 350-400 w power supply or would you think in the 305 W that the rails are good enough to hold up that it's ok? Not that i'm gonna be getting an 8800gt anytime soon. I'm perfectly happy right now with my 8500gt as it does what i like at good enough quality. Looks like a peak load of 245W >>here<<. personally, i would go for at least a 500W PSU. simply because it gives you some future proofing and it also gives you some headroom if you wish to add additional hardware.Just because the card might be able run on a 305 watt PSU, doesn't mean it's a good idea or that the guy won't have problems down the line. If the system is underpowered (which his is) it can lead to system instability and shorten the life of his hardware. In my experience hard drives especially are vulnerable to this. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if his hard drives suddenly started dying on him.I also wouldn't be surprised if the video card does not run as fast as it should do, video cards are known to perform badly with low-rated power supplies. Get at least a 450W PSU for an 8800GT, ASSUMING moderate hardware. Also, remember that Dusty's link is for the power consumption of just the card, not the entire system. |
