Solve : How to back up all files to external HD with XP before internal HD swap?? |
|
Answer» I am currently running a Western Digital 80 GB internal hard drive which is running absoluteley perfect, but I need more internal disk space so I am about to SWAP to a 250GB internal drive. What is the best way for me to send everything on this drive to my 320GB external USB HD, then send that information back to the new 250GB internal drive after the swap? EDIT: Just re-read your post and noticed you want your backup on the external...for this method you would need an image program as external's will not boot Windows OS's without a lot of finagling...this is by design. ---------- Sorry patio, but I got impatient and swapped the HD's before you posted. I copy / pasted everything on my 80GB drive 'Program Files' to the external drive except the 'Windows' FILE. Also, I wanted to install the 80GB drive in another computer (E-Machines 667ix) I have and am planning to network it with my current 'daily used unit' Dell which is the unit with the new drive. The 250GB drive is working fine so far but there were other changes I made out of the blue LOL. I installed Vista Home Premium OS on this computer and am still working on getting all the drivers, updated software ect. installed right now. So far - so good, but I suspect I will have more questions before it's all said and done. I will likely start a new thread with those questions for the porpose of future CHF users being able to find the correct INFO via 'search function'. Actually I have a question about un-doing a disk partition I did months ago on the 250GB drive. I'll start a new thread for the reason previously mentioned. Thank you very much for your help. You guy's are the best!!! Mike |
