Solve : how to identify which hard drive is which within the computer case??

Answer»

I'd like to replace a couple of 300 GB HDs in my computer with larger ones. I can see the size and specs of the 5 current drives under the "manage" menu.... identified as Disk 0, Disk 1, etc.

But when I open up the case, how do I identify which drive is which?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Bill

I hope that for your sake these HDDs have some different CHARACTERISTICS IE: different brands, different SIZES, SATA vs Non SATA. Then running the free copy of Everest http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
should help you to identify which is which.truenorthQuote from: billmatthiesen on June 03, 2010, 08:35:40 AM

They have a label on top of the drive.Commando, Yes of course--BUT as i understand the poster's intent--they only want to remove a "couple" ==and there are 5. So i presume there are only say 2 of the five they want to replace and leave the other 3 there. Then i also presume it is what is on the different ones (the 2) that is going to be the determining factor as to which one(s) they remove. Hope i have that right. Maybe the O/P can come back and clarify.truenorthThe point is, Windows management will identify the drive size, the BIOS will identify the drive location & type. With this INFORMATION, you can read the label on the drive to determine which are the ones you want to replace. Is this a RAID system? If so what level?
