Solve : hp f4140 all in one connected to usb windows vista ignores me?

This should be an easy fix but: I have had this set up for some time and it worked pretty well.
I have checked what I can think of but the PRINTER ignores me.
I have two copies of windows on this machine and the printer works on my 'other' copy.
Have new ink cartidges.
The one anomoly I can find; the ink level doesn't show on the non working copy.
I have INSTALLED the printer several times and used HP's disc when doing so. I also updated drivers via the device list.
I am guessing there is a bug in the copy of windows I am trying to PRINT with, but haven't been able to find it.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
