Solve : HP Pavillon a1600n DVD/CD Writer not working?

Answer»

Today, for the first time,  I tried to copy some pictures onto a CD. Got a message saying no CD DETECTED. Installed an old Kodak Easy Share CD to see if CD ROM would work on it and it didn't. CD ROM is making some funny noises, eg ckicks & clacks. Also sounds like it is starting/stopping. From reading on this website, sounds like CD ROM is suffering from some mechanical problems and needs to be replaced.

Last week I had a Verizon FIOS installation plus did some COMPUTER clean-up - defrag, deleted spyware and some programs I don't use. SEEMS like an odd coincidence that this CD ROM problem happened right after all of the other stuff.

I have only used CD ROM maybe 6 times in the 2-3 years I have had this computer. Seems like it should not fail so soon. Is there anyway I can confirm I need a NEW CD ROM before I pay $100 for one? Thanks.Best way wou;d be to pull it and install it in another machine...if it exhibits the same symptoms it's the drive...
