Solve : I cant get sound ????

Answer»

I have a Gateway computer with speakers. I have Windows xp. For some reason, my sound is off when I want to listen to a recording or HEAR sounds when playing GAMES. I know my speakers work because when I turn on my computer, I hear the normal sounds. This has happened before and I RAN my virus scan and that seemed to work but I ran it yesterday but still cannot get sounds this morning. I have also previously rebooted and finally got the sound to work but I have done that this morning and nothing. I don't have a sound card (really don't know what that is but have never needed it). So can anyone help me? Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager...what is it showing for sound devices and are there any yellow exclamation marks in the list ? ?Ok, here's what I have under device Manager:

Sound, video & game controllers.
audio codecs
legacy video capture devices
logetech microphone (messenger)
media control devices
SOUNDMAX integrated digital audio
video codecs

and this is with a question mark:

? Other devices
? PCI MODEM

thanks for any help, ElaineDo you use the modem on that machine to connect to the web ? ?
Older modems will sometimes cause conflicts with sound cards/devices.
If you don't use it remove it from the machine.
If you do use it re-install the drivers for it and re-boot.

See if this helps...
