Solve : I think I corrupted my LBA sectors; how can I fix them??

Answer»

I used Gnome Partition Editor to re-partition and format an IDE hard disk.  Since then, Scandisk tells me that the LBA sectors are damaged (I don't think they're physically damaged, though) and won't allow Windows 98 to install.  I tried to perform a low-LEVEL format, but the utility I have (hutil.exe) just gives me an error message (it hadn't done that, before).

So, assuming I'm right that the disk isn't physically damaged, and that Gnome Partition Editor just corrupted the LBA sectors, how do I fix this thing?

Any help would be much appreciated!1.  What IDE hard drive do you have?
     o  Manufacturer
     o  Model
     o  Size

2.  hutil.

What is the "exact" error message when you attempt to perform low-level format with "hutil.exe" utility?  And what do you mean by low-level format?

Were you ATTEMPTING the "TOOL -> ERASE HDD -> LOW LEVEL FORMAT"?

The "TOOL -> SET MAX ADDRDESS" screen looks interesting; particularly the "RECOVER NATIVE SIZE" item.

3.  What is the make and model of your computer (or your motherboard)?  The BIOS may have limitation on hard drive capacity.  ALSO be interesting to know how BIOS sees your hard drive.  Does CMOS setup have it configured to "auto detect" the IDE hard drive settings?

4.  I don't have any "hands-on" experience in this area, so if somebody knows what they're doing, JUMP on in.Sounds like you used a powerful tool without reading the instructions...
Here   is the link to GParted's Help Files, FAQ's and Forum.

You probably have to start over with GParted to get the drive recognised. If it doesn't work properly that HDD may have bit the dust.
