Answer» I have read the How IDE Controllers work article but still have some unanswered questions regarding IDE cables:
1. How do I tell what version of IDE (1 through 5) the IDE flat ribbon cable will support?
2. How do I tell wheter I am holding a 40 or 80 pin cable?
3. Why are certain IDE cables yellow and feel almost like rubber whilst others are grey?
4. What's with all the coloured connectors? According to the article, the IDE connector to the mainboard should blue. So far, I have seen BLACK, white and green but not blue.
5. If an IDE DRIVE is assigned Slave, it will have to wait for the Master to respond. If both IDE drives are Master on different CHANNELS, will this INCREASE speed? As far as I know, all versions of IDE are compatable. The motherboard will list weither you have a 40 pin or 80 pin connector. The different colors of cables VARY among the manufacturer.

- Length
- 40 or 80 pins
- Colour
And what about IDE cable speed? ATA 66, ATA 100, ATA 133? I recall having seen an ATA 133 cable in my collection so I will assume that not all (older) IDE cables can work with such speeds.
