Solve : IDE Hard drive?

Answer»

I have a 2.5" 50gb Seagram hard drive from a broken laptop and i want to retrieve the data on it. The simplest soloution seemed to be to buy an akasa integral usb interface. Basically a small metal box to put my hard drive in which connects VIA a usb cable. I plugged it into my newer laptop and it loaded the software, then nothing. When i've looked in my device manager it says 'This device can not start.(code10).

Can anyone explain what this MEANS? Is there another way of RETRIEVING the data on this HDD??

The laptop it's plugged into is a Compaq CQ70 running Vista.Have just tried a Y usb cable on it to see if the increased power helped, i can HEAR it clicking away, but it's still not working!Does that enclosure have a +5VDC input? You may need to provide power through that in order to function properly. BTW, the Y-cable was a good try.Yes it does have a 5V dc input, i'll get a dc adapter and give that a try thanks.Got an adaptor and that solved the problem, not sure why i needed it as usb voltage is 5v but thanks for your help!Voltage is 5VDC, but Windows limits current to USB ports to 500ma (1/2 A).
