Solve : Installing a new Hard Drive - it's stuck & won't work please help!?

Answer»

hi everyone, i've got a new 500gb hard drive to replace my exisiting 20gb hd. computer is about 8 years OLD i think. (well old seagate HD says "032005" on the warrenty sticker so i GUESS that's showing the age?)

I've physically installed it, checked bios, all fine, inserted windows XP disk, it's gone through to formating & done that (all as 1 partitian & took about 2 or 3 hours).

but then next step

disk in cd drive 1
verifying DMI pool data.....
boot from atapi cd-rom: failure...
boot from atapi cd_rom

press any key to boot from cd........
a disk read error occured
press ctrl+alt+del to restart

disk in cd drive 2
verifying DMI pool data.....
boot from atapi cd_rom

press any key to boot from cd........
a disk read error occured
press ctrl+alt+del to restart

disk in laptop, laptop's on vista so LIMITING what i can do, but certainly showing up & giving me the option to run it, no sign of a disk problem & i've USED this disk before & haven't had a problem with it

the slave drive i have is 250gb & that's never been a problem. any ideas what the problem is or how to troubleshoot or fix it?

computer is a P4 1.6gh with 512 ram & disk i'm installing is XPDoes this XP CD have shiny holograms and say Microsoft all over it ? ?
