Solve : Installing a new motherboard with an old HD?

Answer»

Hello, recently we had some COMPUTER problems with a computer here in the office. We sent it to a repair SHOP and they said it needed a new mother board and they wanted over $300 to repair it

I know I can buy one cheap over at newegg, so I plan on doing that... but I have a few questions.

I remember having problems switiching hard drives between 2 computers once because the MB had the hard drive on file or something... so an error would occur. Will anything similar to this happen if I installed a new MB?

Also, these computers are pretty old, maybe 128 ram tops, Win 2k Professional. Would a NEWER MB suck up too much power? Resulting in me having to buy a new power supply as well?

I hope I was able to DESCRIBE my problem good enough for everyone here.

Thanks What did the repair shop tell you........CPU add it...motherbard had it.....etc......win2k needs a ramstick of 256 a least to run properly?thsi depends on what you wish to use the pc for? they can run on 128 ??If new motherboard has same chipset, it has a chance of working.  Swapping motherboards is a "hit or miss" situation.  You should probably plan on reinstalling Win2k.
