Solve : Is It Possible To Buy A New Computer Without Hard Drive?? |
|
Answer» I unfortunately have a Dell Inspiron E5105 - My AC adapter / power supply stopped charging completely for the 4th time and the computer is near dead and the charger wont make connection with the computer. ...Anyways, at this point I've invested more than the price of the laptop into repairs, and it's time for a new laptop. The hard drive is still in perfect tact, so is there such a thing as buying a computer without a hard drive and just installing mine to save money?Unfortunately, you have discovered that laptops are "disposable computers". Pretty much unrepairable by most, except for the very experienced technician. Dells are no better or worse than anyone elses; their "self-help" online support is about the best. Standard telephone support is abysmal. Hard drives are so inexpensive now it's not even worth considering using your old one. You can sell the entire computer for parts; should be able to get at least $100.Thank you everyone for your help! I guess I'm just headed on mission for the best price now - I still am not getting another Dell. I agree with the last comment as far as having to accept that laptops are disposable - but This issue STARTED a week into the brand new comp - and with the amount of other people experiencing the exact same issue, I think Dell's may be cheaper built than others. An additional note - I had a Dell prior to this one - it died because of the exact same issue. I think if you spend $1200 on a laptop - it should make it more than a year. Anyone have any opinions on HP vs. Toshiba? And I'm no longer able to afford a $1200 model - so I'm looking at spending half that - if anyone has any suggestions, I'm totally open! Thank you!It would help us if you could define your intended use of the laptop. The price range you hope to achieve. Also your home country could help if a recommendation is from an on-line source as they may or may not deliver to foreign shores.Be patient some assistance will come as you answer the preceding questions. truenorthHi, For Sure! Here's info on what I need... Usage: - Basic Personal Use - Photo Editing - Wireless Internet Capability - Testing the websites I build on my Mac in IE - so that's the reason for needing a PC. - iTunes and music listening Location - California, US I will basically just need to be able to install my main current programs from my old PC... - Adobe Photoshop CS2 for PC (Previously installed it on Windows Vista) - Dreamweaver 8 for PC (Previously installed it on Windows Vista) - wsftp Home Specs - 2 to 3 GB Ram is fine - 17 inch screen Price Range I'm reallllllly broke so I'm not so sure how realistic my price range is, but I'd love to find something in the $450 to $700 range if it's possible? A laptop is a secondary computer for me, so I don't need it to be amazing. I just need it to be reliable, portable and capable. I was looking at the Toshiba Satellite but just barely started browsing, so any suggestions on brands would be awesome! Thank you! Your 17" screen requirement is what's pushing the price high.Well, if you can forgo the 17" screen and really want to keep the price to a minimum, I suggest this one from Staples: Compaq Presario CQ62-225NR 15.6" Laptop. Looks like the current selling price is a special, temporary, promotional price, so you might need to act soon. I have a Compaq Presario F572US notebook PC I bought 3 years ago and it's worked out fine for me. Just a thought, if your primary machine is a Mac, and you are using a PC to check your web site, why not check out the used market on EBay or Craigslist. You could probably pick up two or three different machines for less than a new one. That would let you see how your web site looks on different OSs and processors, and different memory sizes.Awesome Suggestions - Thank you! And I can totally forgo the 17 inch of that's the main price pusher. Thank you everyone!Given your CA location you may well be in close proximity to a "Fry's". If Soybean's suggestion does not meet your fancy then i would suggest that you check them out as they always feature a deal on a desktop and a laptop in their weekly flyers. However it needs to be mentioned that while their flyers mention a great variety of products at often awesome prices those same prices are not necessarily reflected in their "bricks and mortar" store prices. So if you see something in the flyer call the store to see if they can match it (you may save on delivery charges). Unless you decide to act on soybean's time sensitive OFFER i believe more suggestions will be forthcoming. Very fine job on defining your needs by the way.truenorth http://www.frys.com/prettyprincess, If your still around here is this weeks Fry's on-line add. Take note of the laptop offer in the upper left corner of the 1st page. If your short on cash and just need something to get you through the need for a laptop for a few years perhaps that would do the trick. truenorth http://www.frys.com/category/Outpost/Notebooks+&+Tablets/Notebooks?site=frysecampaignHey! Thank you! I ACTUALLY ended up ordering the Compaq that Soybean linked to. I appreciate everyone's help! Thank you!!!! |
