Answer» Got the dreaded call at work today from my daughter. "Dad, I was chatting with my friend online and the computer just shut off"
She tried turning it back on and got a message that the computer overheated and I talked her through the reboot.
She finished chatting and when I came home from work, the screen was black (power save mode). I tried SIGNING on but nothing happened. The screen stayed black and the monitor was still acting in "sleep" mode.
I shut off the power for about 2 hours and tried turning it on again with no luck. Both fans are working and there are no beeping or other sounds. It was a little dusty but nothing really major. We've had problems with the computer overheating before and I took it from the cabinet in the desk and now it's on top next to the monitor. It's a Gateway with a Pent ium 4 processer but that's pretty much all I know about computers. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Your motherboard is probably dead since you don't get any beeps. The way to tell is by takeing out your RAM and seeing if you dont get a beep. After you replace the bad board see if it still doesn't overheat. You mite need a bigger HEATSINK for it. Which AIDS in keeping the CPU at the reight tempaturesLooks like we may have GOTTEN lucky. A friend of mine came over (didn't know he fixed them for a living). He ripped it apart, cleaned out everything, put it back together (he had a bigger heatsink that he installed) and everything works BETTER than before. Not bad for a 6 pack.
Thanks WOW!!!Your welcome an very lucky that you did have to get any new parts
