Solve : Is my Video Card about to die??

Answer»

I have a GeForce 4 TI 4200 (AGP 8X)

Over the last month or so, I've occasionally noticed wrong-colored pixels when I visit websites, or sometimes when I'm looking through files with Windows Explorer. For example, there would be a couple red pixels in a letter in this forum post, or a line of green across an otherwise white screen. These never appear in the same place, and move as the letter in question would move, leading me to believe that it is NOT my monitor's problem.

Today, it got considerably worse. I loaded up Warcraft III, and black dots were flickering across the main screen. Think TV static, but only about 50 or so of these dots, and the rest of the image is fine.

What I THINK is happening is that my VIDEO card is about to die. I've tried inspecting the card itself (nothing wrong) and re-installing my drivers (didn't help). Is there anything I can do to fix this short of replacing the card, and how much TIME do I likely have before it gives up the ghost?

Thanks for your help.In my experience they can go on like this for months and months without degrading any further or can completely fail in a week.
When you say you inspected the card what do you mean ? ?
Is the fan operating properly ?
Did you remove it CLEAN the contacts and re-seat it ?

The only real way to diagnose if it's the card is to swap it into a known working machine and install the drivers...if it does the same thing then it's the card.

Good Luck.

P.S. Sometimes i have just replaced the fan and extended the LIFE of the card somewhat...best thing to do in this case is remove the fan and take it with you to a computer store to match up the size etc. What I mean by 'inspected the card' is that nothing soldered on was in danger of coming off, there wasn't gunk in either the card slot or the monitor plug, and the fan spun.

Thanks for the advice. I suppose I'd best ORDER a new card while I can still see my display. What about dust on the fan blades and heatsink of the video card? Did you check that and clean if needed?
