Solve : Just bought a new computer. Feedback appreciated!?

Answer»

Hello everyone. This is my first post here on the forums. I hope this is in the correct forum, if not I'm sorry. I am 19 years old living by myself and going to school. I finally saved up the money to buy myself a NICE new laptop; It's a Dell Studio 17. I read the reviews on it and they were all pretty good. I CUSTOMIZED the computer, and below is the hardware. Basically has anyone else bought a Dell Studio 17 laptop? If so, how do you like it? Is the hardware I customized it with below half decent? I spent 1,300 dollars on it. It has more features then I listed below(some other bells and whistles) but I only listed the hardware because that's all I really care about. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

Studio 1735, Intel Core 2 Duo T8100, 2.1GHz, 800Mhz, 3M L2 Cache

4GB, DDR2, 2 Dimm

Hi Resolution, glossy widescreen 17.0in LCD (1440x900) w/ 2.0M pixel Camera

Intel Graphics Media Accelerate

320G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 Home Premium Edition, English

8X Slot Load CD / DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)

Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy Advanced HD Software Edition

Dell Wireless 1510 802.11n Half Mini Card

Integrated 2.0M Pixel Webcam

McAfee SecurityCenter 15-month

85 WHR 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

You have chosen a Windows Vista Premium System

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor

sorry, I'm still learning computers. But I think that 4 GIGS of memory might be a little more than you need.
And you might experience some slowdowns if you don't have a high end video card to go with Vista. to fix this follow these instructions:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-aero-on-windows-vista/Why would I have slowdowns? Because my Memory is too high?that seems like a rip off. $1300 and you don't even have a good graphics card
Here's some high end laptops for that price and there a lot faster

I don't believe you'll have a slow down with that RAM, because you have a descent processor.
More RAM is always better. But over 4GB doesn't really make much difference. So you made a good choice there.

If you're only using the laptop for stuff like Word, surfing the web ect then you'll be fine with that laptop. Alienwares are mainly for games, but if you laptop can run a high end game then it will be great at everything else Quote from: Jesse88 on November 22, 2008, 09:45:24 AM

320G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

The hard drive might be a little slow as it's 5400rpm but it won't make a huge difference. Overall its a good laptop just a little pricey.Quote from: saint_hades on November 22, 2008, 11:25:47 AM

Alienwares are always twice the price of other computers. Until I see an alienware that is a good deal (can be built for only a nominal difference) I would be hard pressed to reccomend them to anybody at all. I never really found laptops to be great for gaming anyways, can't get the same power in those little guys that you can in a desktop(for less money even).

This laptop can be good, depending on what you want to use it for. For the web you'll be flying around websites and I don't think you'll be EXPERIENCING to much of a slowdown if any. If you do get any slowdowns on your desktop you can tweak vista settings anyways. As far as the 4gb of ram part, unless you are using a 64 bit operating system it will only recognize roughly 3.2gb. Having alot of RAM can't ever hurt and not enough ram is a common way to get slowdowns doing anything.

It looks like a pretty solid system for surfing the web and doing a good amount of work, but I wouldn't expect to be doing high end gaming. It is a little pricey but as long as you're getting what you want out of it, it will probably be a good purchase. (and please don't feel like you should buy an alienware to get good performance.)"Why would I have slowdowns? Because my Memory is too high?"

Sorry, I guess I worded that wrong
I meant that I know a lot of people whose computers get slowdowns with vista because their Graphics cards aren't too good. I provided the link for you just in case this happens for you.

And the RAM thing was just a side note. You can never have too much(and it will never slow you down by having too much), but I find that anything more than 2 gigs is little pointless at the moment.

Oh, and I wouldn't waste your money on Alienware, If I were you

Alienwares are mainly for games

Quick Correction- Alienwares are mainly for NEW games.

I'm quite content to explore the world of older games- especially since I can max everything out and still get over 200 fps.saint hades is our resident" Alienware is the best" contributor...
Take it with a grain of salt...Also- why the focus on graphics? I've had WAY more slowdowns with my crappy Audigy SE, which turned out to simply offload all it's work to the processor.

From the looks of this laptops config- this ones in a similiar boat. On the other hand- I don't think anybody makes Laptops with a separate sound DSP...graphics card is important. Dedicated memory graphics card frees all the ram stick memory to system so system can use all the ram stick memory.

But integrated graphics card is pretty good enough if you do not play super high demanding games and you are mostly just surfing the web, playing music and all the basics.

But I see the system's got just an Integrated Media Accelerator, which in my opinion is not as good as an Nvidia M graphics for some reason. (Intel was never too hot in graphics cards, they're a processor company!)mcxeb: The newer Intel IGPs are actually pretty decent.
BC: I have a laptop with a PCMCIA Audigy 2 ZS, also they make an X-Fi Xtreme Audio for Expresscard (avoid) AFAIK that's the only way to get a dedicated sound card on a laptop.
saint_hades: "but if you laptop can run a high end game then it will be great at everything else" - Really?

Jesse88: I think that's a pretty decent laptop. It wouldn't be my choice, but I don't like laptops, so there you go.Quote from: mcxeb52! on November 23, 2008, 01:07:23 AM
(Intel was never too hot in graphics cards, they're a processor company!)

On the other hand, that means they must suck at processors too, since they are a memory company. Processors was supposed to be a little side product in the late 70's.Yea, it's a little overpricey but I don't really use it for high end gaming. Just for school and surfing the web, etc. Thanks for the feedback though guys.I think, it's really decent laptop. Little bit pricey, but what the heck? You don't buy laptop twice a year.
Have fun

P. S. Just to EXPLAIN RAM situation. All 32-bit systems can handle (in theory) up to 4GB of RAM, but they're really able to use only a bit over 3GB (more, or less - depending on machine configuration). No harm done, even if you installed 8GB, just anything over 3 something GB won't be used.
