Solve : Keyboard woes?

Answer»

I have a brand new (2 WEEKS old) DELL Inspiron 531.  My daughter disconnected the keyboard without shutting down the computer first, and when I went to reconnect it, the light on the BOARD comes on but it will not type.  No keys function, except when I hold them down, for example:  SSSSSSSSSSSSSS.  Does anyone have any ideas?  I have tried shutting down the computer, connecting the keyboard, and rebooting.  I have also tried another working keyboard from another computer in our home.  No luck.  This keyboard does work on my office computer.  I was just wondering if I needed to reinstall something or not.  Would sure appreciate any help.  Thanks.Disconnecting a keyboard without shutting down first should not damage any computer.

It is likely the socket was defective to start with and the action just accelerated its failure.

If it is two weeks old it is best to contact the manufacturer to sort it under warranty. Too much fiddling may invalidate that.

Tell them that you have tried switching KEYBOARDS but leave out the bit about your daughter unplugging it to save any uneccesary complications. My daughter just went into "Sticky Keys" and unchecked the "Filter keys" option, and it fixed the problem.  Thanks for your REPLY, and maybe this will help others who have this problem.Glad it's sorted
