Solve : Lack of available sound sources to record from?

Answer»

Greetings,

I am would like to RECORD the audio from a DVD into a new mp3 file; to do so, I have tried a few DIFFERENT programs which should do the job (all sound recorder XP, blaze media pro). Unfortunately, none of these programs seem to be able to detect the sound output from the computer (on my previous computer, I had the option "What you hear" when selecting the source to record from). The only available option is to have the program record from the microphone input. Essentially, I'm trying to do what's described here:

http://www.blazemp.com/convert_dvd_audio.htm

but I have no "wave", "stereo mix", "what you hear" or other sound source options.

I'm using a Gateway M6846 Notebook running 64-bit Vista Home. The sound seems to be integrated into the motherboard (not on a separate card?); in the devices folder the only thing listed under sound devices is "SigmaTel High Definition audio CODEC". If you need any other specifications, please let me know and I'll do my best to provide them.

I'm none too computer savvy so I can't diagnose the problem myself; is it possible that this particular audio codec SIMPLY doesn't allow for recording from different sources? If so, would it be possible to use a different driver?

Thanks in advance!

mabye you dont have the full version or something what you could try is http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ and this http://audacityteam.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=36&p=18962After some more research, I actually discovered the problem. A nice explanation can be found here in case anyone else has the same issue:

Basically, Gateway is selling a bad PRODUCT. However, it may not be entirely their fault, as this problem is PRESENT in a number of other large brands (Dell, for example).

Looks like I'll be purchasing a nice sound card for my laptop.
@Motty: Thanks for posting back.

Best of luck!
