Answer» suddenly my LAPTOP keyboard isnt working. most of the keys are fine except or a few. when i press the j button i get a 1, when i press k, i get 2,l=3, p=-, o=6, and i=5. the keys r not switched the 1-6 BUTTONS work fine. is this a virus u've heard of maybe? whats going on this is so annoying. if i don't get this fixed my boyfriend will blame for breaking the laptop. ill never live it down, please helpSounds like your Numbers Lock (Num Lk) is on. You should be able to see TINY numbers on U, I, O, J , K, L and M. When the Num Lk is on it allows these keys to emulate the 10 key numbers PAD on a full keyboard. I agree with "Eg0Death". Your keyboard is fine. Because of limited keyboard space, manufacturers "map" the numeric keypad on top of the right side of your alphanumeric keyboard. If you can turn off the "Numbers Lock" you should be fine.
If you want to post the MAKE and model number of the laptop, we may be able to pull the documentation and verify which key sequence turns the numeric keypad function on/off.
