Solve : Laptop won't power up?

Answer»

I have a HP DV1331SE laptop that won't power up. It runs Win XP Home SP3. It's been running like a champ till now.

It went to standby one night & it never woke up. Tried power button, of course, to no avail. No LED's lit up, no nothing.

Actually it did it once before the night before, and after I returned home, plugged it in and after about 3 hours of non-responsiveness, it magically started back up.

Went to Hp's site, they suggested to re-seat memory chips.
Also to disconnect power adapter & battery & hold power button down for 1 minute. Then try to power up.
Nope! Didn't work.

Battery seems to be ok, LASTS about an hour & a half, maybe, although it's 4 yrs old.
Also took a multi-meter to the power adapter, it read the nominal 18.5 volts like it should, so that checks out.

Power switch? Is it replaceable?
Power supply? Is it integrated or is it replaceable?

I'm open to any suggestions right now. Is it fixable? or is it worth it?
as to whether it is worth fixing it is far to early to tell until a DEFINITION of the cause can be determined. Some simple things you might want to try to see if it creates a difference. With the computer turned on exert a bit of hand (or finger) pressure on the computer surface in various locations. Particular emphasis in the AREAS of the power switch, the point at which the adapter enters the UNIT,the area where the battery is located. Prior to the total loss were you able to detect fans working? Did you actually do the memory reseating HP recommended? I must confess to very limited knowledge of laptops however the pressure suggestion i have provided in the past has determined the physical area of the problem. Be carefull not too much pressure.goodluck, truenorthQuote from: truenorth on February 02, 2009, 04:49:49 PM

Tried the pressure thing all over, especially around the power switch & standby switch areas. Fan did run when it did finally turn on. HDD as well.
Also pulled out the HDD, optical drive, & PCI Com card, also battery & tried to boot that way. It started once, but that was it. Tried to start with one item re-installed at a time, but to no avail

I'm at a wits end, I sure hate to lose this one!
Thanx for your response & I'm still hoping for more suggestions. Am i interpreting correctly to believe that there did occur a start up when pressure was exerted at some specific location? truenorth
