Solve : LCD Monitor squealing when fax on?

Answer»

Its been a while since I have been on this side of the table...

My LCD monitor squeals at a very high pitch that only I in my entire family can hear. It only happens when the Fax machine is on.

How do I stop the disturbance WITHOUT moving the fax machine to another location of the house?

Its an HP LCD Monitor, and an HP Office Jet J5780 All-In-One Printer (Great printer, excellent scanner, by the way)
The computer itself is also HP, however, its definately not the computer.

Thank you for your replies

- Zylstrahmmm- are the fax machine and monitor on the same circuit?

I have the same problem with televisions- I can "hear" when their on, even in another room of the house (this isn't SOUND coming from the TV speakers, either- some strange high-pitched warble.Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 14, 2008, 08:16:13 PM

Yup, same outlet. I could try and switch them around and see what happens.
The problem is that I only have a limited number, I will see what i can do nevertheless.

The problem also occurs where my parents:
  • Cant hear it
  • Dont care
  • Assume it cant be that bad to listen to

Horrible noise, isnt it?

It would be, but it's extremely quiet to the point I have to concentrate to hear it. Guess I'm lucky.Well, I changed the plugin it was in. I took it off the surge protector, and placed it on its own plug on the same outlet. The noise is greatly reduced, and much better. I can barely hear it now.

Now all I need to solve is the static issues that I am having with the LCD Monitors speakers. (BTW: The squeal wasnt from the speakers, since I turned those off and it continued to make noise)

Thanks, BC_Programmer If it's any consolation, the sensitivity to high pitched sounds above about 12 kiloHertz reduces with age. Most people under about 20-25 years old can hear (for example) the whistle around 15 kHz that TVs make, but older people cannot. It can be hard to make people believe how bad it can be. In England, some owners of shops use a device called the "Mosquito" to deter teens from gathering in groups outside. It emits a 17 kHz whistle which many young people find very irritating. However some teens take advantage of their sensitivity to high frequencies by using a "teen buzz" cellphone ringtone which (most) adults cannot hear.

These kind of things are really annoying.
My graphics card squeals under load - thankfully fairly quietly, but it's annoying. I wouldn't think anyone else in my house could hear it, and they wouldn't care if they could, as it's in my room.
TVs get to me, and the CRT monitors we use in college make a continuous very loud high pitched squeal after being on for a few hours. of course, the lecturers don't hear it and wonder why we can't do any work . . .
And the mosquito devices Dias mentions really get to me. Any shop which uses it I now avoid because I can't stand to get close enough to the sound to actually enter the door. Even if I'm across the street it still really gets me.
Another downside of being young I guess.

Anyway, just some slightly off topic comments I wanted to add.Our large CRT TV makes a squeal which my girlfriend can hear but I can't. Slight PRESSURE on the casing or moving the set about 1 cm can make it GO away, so I thnk it must the plastic case VIBRATING in sympathy with an internal component. I have heard of people attaching blobs of 2 pack epoxy ("Araldite" in the UK) to certain internal components to dampen the vibration but that is something for qualified personnel ONLY.
Is the noise in my head bothering anyone ? ?

Naw, I'm just jealous the voices only talk to you.
